Born and educated in Ukraine, Serhy Yekelchyk received a PhD from the University of Alberta in 2000. He is the author of eight books on modern Ukrainian history, Stalinism, and Russo-Ukrainian relations. His monograph, Stalin’s Citizens: Everyday Politics in the Wake of Total War (Oxford University Press, 2014), was the recipient of the Best Book Award from the American Association for Ukrainian Studies, and its Ukrainian translation in 2019 received a special diploma from the Lviv Book Forum. This article is devoted to the study of previously unknown documents that shed light on the fate of Jerzy Matusiński, the former Consul of the Republic of Poland in Kyiv. We introduce into scholarly circulation documents discovered in the Sectoral State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine. Analysis of these sources is instrumental for clarifying the particulars of the operation to detain and arrest employees of the Polish Consulate in Kyiv that was carried out by Soviet state security organs in September 1939.
